When it comes to roofing, it’s important to have some knowledge about the terms and jargon that are commonly used. However, unless you’re a roofing professional, some of the terms used by contractors, architects, and builders can be confusing. Well, that’s about to change, because, In this blog post, we’ll provide you with a run-down of some basic roofing terms you need to know.
1. Deck
The deck is the foundation of your roof. It is typically made of plywood or oriented strand board (OSB) and is attached to the rafters. The deck provides a flat surface for the roofing material (for example, singles) to be installed.
2. Rafters
The rafters are the basic structure of your roof, forming the shape of the roof and supporting the weight of the decking and roofing material.
3. Shingles
Shingles are the most common type of roofing material used in residential roofing. They are thin, flat, rectangular pieces that overlap each other to form a barrier against water and weather. Shingles can be made of asphalt, wood, metal, or other materials.
4. Solar Shingles
Also known as solar roof tiles or solar roof shingles, solar shingles are photovoltaic cells integrated into individual roofing shingles. This is an innovative and aesthetically pleasing alternative to traditional solar panels, as they blend seamlessly with the overall appearance of a roof.

5. Flashing
Flashing is a material used to seal the joints and edges of your roof. It is typically made of metal (such as aluminum or copper) or plastic and prevents water from seeping into the vulnerable parts of your roof.
6. Gutters
Gutters are the channels that collect and direct rainwater away from your roof and home. They are typically made of aluminum, steel, or vinyl, and are installed at the edges of your roof. Properly installed gutters will prevent water damage to your home’s foundation and landscape.
